Yes, there is a probability of conception if you had an intercourse during your period.
It’s a common myth that you can’t conceive during periods if gets intimacy with your partner. However, reality may be different. Periods can decrease the chances of getting pregnant but pregnancy can happen, though it’s rare.
How does pregnancy occur during my periods?
Pregnancy happens when male sperms interact with an egg within 24 hours after ovulation. This event may take place during periods for two reasons.
The first reason is the time at which ovulation occurs. Although it is difficult to figure out the exact time of ovulation in every woman, ovulation mostly occurs between days 11 and 21 of your menstrual cycle, on average. If you remain unfertilized, your periods will start 12 to 14 days after ovulation.
The second reason is lifespan of sperms inside female body. The sperms may remain alive there for seven days. So, if a woman has shorter menstrual cycle, means less time between ovulation and periods, she may get pregnant by the sperm entered her body during periods.
Can I get my periods while I’m pregnant?
You may bleed when you are pregnant but that bleeding is entirely different. This is not menstrual bleeding and happens in very start of your pregnancy, and is called implantation bleeding. This is like lighter and shorter periods without cramps. It is the time when a fertilized egg attaches with the wall of uterus.
Implantation bleeding can be usually seen at the time of your periods so it is often mistaken as menstruation during pregnancy.
