How much does Wegovy cost per month in Ireland?

Wegovy 7.2 mg in Ireland: what is the new dose?
In 2026 the European Commission approved a higher 7.2 mg once-weekly maintenance dose of Wegovy for adults with obesity. It is meant for people who have been on the 2.4 mg dose for at least four weeks and need further weight reduction, alongside diet and physical activity.
In the STEP UP clinical trial, people taking 7.2 mg lost an average of about 20.7% of their body weight, compared with about 17.5% on 2.4 mg. Individual results vary.
When it was first approved in the EU, the 7.2 mg dose was given as three 2.4 mg injections at the same time once a week, and a single 7.2 mg pen was under review. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how the dose is supplied in Ireland now. The higher dose is not right for everyone, and only your doctor can decide whether moving to 7.2 mg is suitable for you.
Is Wegovy covered by the HSE, medical card or Drugs Payment Scheme?
For weight management, Wegovy is not currently reimbursed by the HSE. That means it is not covered by the medical card (GMS) or the Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS), and most people pay the full pharmacy price privately. Check the HSE website or ask your pharmacist for the latest position.
Who may be eligible for Wegovy in Ireland?
For weight management, a doctor may consider Wegovy for adults who have:
- a BMI of 30 or more, or
- a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnoea.
It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Your doctor will also check your medical history before deciding whether it is suitable. You can check your BMI with our free BMI calculator.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is another once-weekly injection for weight management. See our full guide to Mounjaro prices in Ireland.
Which medicine suits you depends on your health, your goals and how you respond, so it is a decision to make with your doctor. Wegovy tablets were also approved in the EU in 2026. Read our guide to Wegovy tablets in Ireland for the latest on availability.
Side effects and who should not take Wegovy
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain and tiredness. They are usually worse when starting or increasing the dose and often settle over time. Rare but serious side effects include inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) and gallbladder problems. Seek urgent medical help if you have severe, persistent stomach pain.
Wegovy may not be suitable if you:
- are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
- have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome
- have had pancreatitis
- have severe kidney, liver or stomach problems
How to get Wegovy in Ireland
Because Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, you need a consultation with a doctor first. This can be your own GP, a specialist, or an online doctor service with Irish-registered GPs.
- Consultation: a doctor reviews your health, BMI and medical history.
- Decision: if treatment is clinically appropriate, the doctor sends a prescription to the pharmacy you choose through Healthmail, the HSE’s secure email system.
- Collection: you collect and pay for the medication at your pharmacy.
- Follow-up: your doctor reviews your progress and side effects before each dose increase.
Only use pharmacies registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI). You can check any pharmacy on the PSI register. Never buy pens from social media or unregistered websites. The HPRA has warned that falsified weight loss pens are sold online and can be dangerous.
